Glorious Revolution   Started in 1688 demonstrated the power of elected representatives over the monarchy. The English Bill of Rights 1689 gave certain basic rights; inspired American Bill of Rights

Navigation Acts   It directed trade between England and colonies. 1) Colonial merchants had to use English ships. 2) certain products could be sold only to English controlled land. These caused conflict.

Great Awakening   It was a return to faith of earlier days. 1720's - 1740's Jonathan Edwards had powerful sermons. George Whitefield started religious revivals. This led to the formation of new churches.

The Enlightenment   It began in Europe in the mid-1700's. It was based on the reasoning that knowledge, reason & science could improve society. People experimented and published reports.

Benjamin Franklin   He was an American Scientist and Revolutionary leader. He was from a poor family, worked as a printer, and became rich.

John Peter Zenger   He was charged with libel and found not guilty. This was an important decision for freedom of the press.
