Basic Disk   The default type for new disks installed. Basic disks support the creation of simple volumes and up to four primary partitions or three primary partitions and 1 extended partition; the extended partition can contain any number of logical drives.
🗑
DiskPart   Command-line tool used to manage partitions for both physical and virtual disks. It can be used to attach, expand, shrink, or detach drives.
🗑
Dynamic Disk   Disk type that allows you to create specialized disk volumes such as spanned, striped, mirrored, and RAID-5 volumes. You can also create an almost unlimited number of volumes on the dynamic disk and can work with and upgrade without rebooting.
🗑
Fixed Provisioning   An option configured when creating a virtual hard disk. The size specified for the virtual disk is allocated and committed at the time of creation.
🗑
GPT   GUID partition table is a newer partition type used to create drives larger than 2 TB.
🗑
MBR   Master Boot Record is an older partition type that is used to create drives up to 2 TB.
🗑
Mount   The task of attaching a drive to the operating system so that its contents can be accessed.
🗑
RAID   Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Provides advanced storage capabilities to increase performance and/or hardware resiliency.
🗑
Storage Pool   Grouping of physical disks for the purpose of combining or pooling available storage.
🗑
Storage Space   A portion of an overall storage pool that is defined by the size of a virtual disk.
🗑
Thin Provisioning   An option configured while creating a virtual hard disk. The virtual hard disk starts small and grows as data is written. The VHD file grows up to the size of the physical disk containing it.
🗑
VHD   Virtual hard disk refers to the formatting of a virtual hard drive. VHDs are available in legacy VHD format or new Server 2012 R2 VHDX format that supports larger drives.
🗑
Access Control List   (ACL) A list of users and groups that can access an object such as a file, folder, or printer and the type of access granted.
🗑
Always offline mode   A new Offline File mode in Win Server 2012 R2 that enables faster access to cached files and redirected folders in an AD DS environment.
🗑
File and Storage Services Role   A server role that provides utilities that enable you to manage files, folders, and other shared resources. It’s installed by default when you install Win Server 2012 R2.
🗑
Network File System (NFS)   Technology that enables UNIX to share files and apps across the network.
🗑
New Technology File System (NTFS)   The file system originally provided with Windows NT and present in modern server versions that supports volume mounting, compression, encryption, and security.
🗑
NTFS Permissions   The security feature available in NTFS that allows you to grant or deny various levels of access to files and folders on NTFS formatted volumes.
🗑
Offline Files   A feature built in to Win Server 2012 R2/Win 8 that enables you to cache locally stored copies of shared files and folders, so that you can work with them while offline and resynchronize your changes when you go back.
🗑
Quota   A specific limit configured. Disk quotas are used to limit user data stored on servers with the use of NTFS quotas.
🗑
Server Message Block (SMB)   A network file sharing protocol that enables applications to read and write data and request information from programs on network servers.
🗑
Shared Folders   Folders that are made available for access by users who are working at another computer on the network.
🗑
Shared Folder Permissions   The security feature available when sharing files and folders across a network that allows you to grant or deny access rights to network users.
🗑
Snapshot   Refers to the concept of creating a point-in-time copy of a file or virtual machine.
🗑
Synchronizing Files   The act of copying files from a shared folder on the network to an offline files cache on a computer, or copying the same files back to the shared folder after a user has modified them.
🗑
VSS   Volume Shadow Services refers to the infrastructure required to create copies of files on your server for the purpose of quick restores of previous versions.
🗑
Work Folders   A new role service in the Win Server 2012 R2 File and Storage Services role that enables users to access data on a file server from any remote location without the need for a VPN connection.
🗑
