classical democracy   a form of democracy that is dependant upon broad-based participation by responsible, well-informed citizens who are motivated to act in their own and society´s interest. This is one description of American democracy and how it functions.

direct democracy   a form of government in which citizens have the opportunity to come together to vote on most or all issues rather than delegating this responsibility to elected representatives. In the U.S., direct democracy has only been practiced on the local level. The

hyperpluralism   an extreme form of pluralism in which political interests are divided into so many competing and offsetting groups that it is difficult to find common ground for policy solutions that will be acceptable to the majority. Interest groups lobby congressional

identity politics   a form of government in which citizens have an indirect impact on government because they select policymakers to make decisions for them. The citizens delegate the authority to govern to their representatives. This form of government is often called a rep

pluralism   an explanation of how American democracy operates which tries to reconcile democratic principles with the evidence that most people do not participate very actively in politics. Pluralism maintains that a sufficient number of people belong to enough inter

popular sovereignty   the right of a people to govern themselves.

republic   a form of indirect democracy in which people do not vote directly on issues or policy, but delegate the authority to govern to their elected representatives. This is the form of government set forth in the U.S. Constitution.
