| USS Maine | US warship that mysteriously exploded and sank in harbor off of Cuba. Spain was blamed despite no evidence. Yellow journalists exaggerated the story to gain American support to go to war with Spain.

| Treaty of Paris – treaty which ended the Spanish-American war of 1898 The terms were: | a. US acquired Guam and Puerto Rico
b. Spain freed Cuba
c. Spain sold the Philippines to the US for $20 million

| Spanish-American War | US went to war with Spain to help free the Cuban people from Spanish oppression, as well as protect our economic interests in Cuba. The explosion of the USS Main was the “tipping point” which triggered US involvement

| Platt Amendment – A series of provisions that the US insisted Cuba add to its new constitution | a. Cuba must not take on debt it couldn’t repay
b. Cuba could not make treaties that might limit its independence or permit a foreign power to control any of its territory

| Roosevelt Corollary | an extension of the Monroe Doctrine, announced by Teddy Roosevelt, under which the US claimed the right to protect its economic interests by means of military intervention in the affairs of Western Hemisphere nations

| De Lome letter | letter written by the Spanish Ambassador to the US which criticized President McKinley calling him weak. Publication of the letter helped generate public support for the war.

| Boxer Rebellion | a rebellion in which members of a Chinese secret society sought to free their country from foreign influence

| Open Door Policy | an American proposal to try to keep Chinese markets open for all and not allow any country to gain control over the region. The purpose was to further trade interests of the US.

| Panama Canal | an artificial waterway cut through the Isthmus of Panama to provide a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Teddy Roosevelt supported Panamian independence from Columbia to make this happen.
