Treaty of Paris – treaty which ended the Spanish-American war of 1898 The terms were:   a. US acquired Guam and Puerto Rico b. Spain freed Cuba c. Spain sold the Philippines to the US for $20 million

Boxer Rebellion   a rebellion in which members of a Chinese secret society sought to free their country from foreign influence

Open Door Policy   an American proposal to try to keep Chinese markets open for all and not allow any country to gain control over the region. The purpose was to further trade interests of the US.

Panama Canal   an artificial waterway cut through the Isthmus of Panama to provide a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Teddy Roosevelt supported Panamian independence from Columbia to make this happen.
