Enlightment   The absolute monarchy said to have Devine right to rule and Hobbes backed them up by saying people are bad and need gov't. Locke said we needed a social contract with our gov't. Montes Quieu said we need balanced gov't. Voltaire said freedom of religion.

New England Colonies   England wanted wealth and colonists wanted religios freedom.in 1620 separatists landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts called pilgrims. They signed the Mayflower compact and agreed to obey the laws passed by the majority.

New England Colonies cont.   In 1630 a larger religious group of 15000 called the Puritans established the Massachusetts bay colony. They were led by John Winthrop. Thomas Hooker founded Connecticut. Roger Williams started Rhode Island. John Wheelwright started New Hampshire.

Middle Colonies   Started by the Dutch And was called New Netherlands. New Amsterdam became nyc. King Charles gave his captured colony to his brother that named in New York. The duke gave his southern land to his friends and they named it New Jersey.

Middle Colonies cont.   Pennsylvanias started around William Penn and the Quakers. they were pacifists meaning the refused to fight. The tree most southern countries became Delaware. The colonies were tolerant of many religions.

Southern Colonies   Catholics that were persecuted in England made the colony of Maryland. Virginia grow rapidly but a rebellion of wester farmers broke out led by Nathaniel Bacon. It was against Native American villages and Virginias Capitol. Georgia was started in 1733.

Southern Colonies cont.   Georgia was a senators colony. What distinguished the southern colonies from England's other colonies were the large plantations that were home to millions of enslaved Africans.

French and Indian War   Native Americans- wanted to keep there land to grow in peace. France- wanted to continue trading with the Indians. And wanted there to be safe ways for their people to travel. England- wanted the farmland for the population to increase.

French and Indian War BIG Ideas   British will gain land west of the Appalachian mts and East of the Mississippi river. French lose land claims in America. Washington becomes a household name for being a war hero. King limits movement of colonists past the Appalachian mts.

BIG Ideas cont.   England begins taxing colonists to pay for war effort.

Treaty of Paris   1) England gets Canada and all land East of the Mississippi River. 2) England gets Florida 3) Spain gets land West of the Mississippi.

Proclamation of 1763   1) King makes it illegal to move past the Appalachian mts. 2) Colonists upset because they fought for the land and now they can't use it.
