Plant domestication   is the genetic modification of a plant such that its reproductive success depends on human intervention.

Carl Sauer   believed the experiments necessary to establish agriculture and settle in one place would occur in lands of plenty. He suggested that southeast and south asia may have been where the first tropical plant domestication occurred, more than 14,000 years ago.

Root crops   are plants that are reproduced by cultivating either the roots or cuttings from the plants.

Seed crops   are plants that are reproduced by cultivating seeds. The cultivation of seed crops marked the beginning of what has been called the First agricultural Revolution.

Benefits/limitations of first agricultural revolutions.   some benefits from stable food source. but dependent on limited number of crops. Led to anemia, often found in diets with high maize and other cereal dependence. Cereal diets also wear down teeth, led to higher levels of tooth decay.

subsistence agriculture   is self-sufficient agriculture that is small scale and low technology and emphasizes food production for local consumption, not for trade.

Nomadism   involves the systematic and continuous movement of groups of herders, their families, and their herds in search of forage materials. often persecuted and 'made' to settle down.

Transhumance   Movement of herds according to seasonal rhythms: warmer lowland areas in the winter and cooler, highland areas in the summer
