Term
Definition
Microscope   One of biology's most important tools. Refers to an instrument made up of a series of lenses held together in a tube. Useful for learning biological concepts and techniques. Magnifications range from 2X to over 100,000X
🗑
Magnifying Glass   The simplest kind of magnifying lens
🗑
Compound Microscope   The first microscope used in lab. Magnifications vary from about 40X to 450X
🗑
Electron Microscope   Can magnify over 100,000X
🗑
Monocular Compound Microscope   Objects examined must be s small or thin that light can pass through them to your eye. See and distinguish form and structure bc some parts absorb more light than others (transmitted light)
🗑
"Monocular"   Image is viewed with one eye
🗑
"Compound"   Refers to the image being produced by the interaction of several lenses
🗑
Magnification   The degree to which an objects image is enlarged under the microscope
🗑
Resolution   The ability of a microscope to reveal fine detail which permits us to clearly separate small details present in the image of the object
🗑
Working Distance   The distance between the objective and the cover slip or the specimen when lenses are in correct focus. The distance varies with each objective magnification
🗑
Parfocal   A magnification system where little adjustment in focus must be made when changing from one objective to another
🗑
Field of View   The circle of light seen when looking through the microscope
🗑
Wet Mount   A glass microscope slide with a specimen, a drop of water, and a cover slip
🗑
Arm   A curved structure that supports the lenses, state, and focus knobs. It provides a connection between the lenses and a handle to grasp the microscope
🗑
Base   The bottom part of the microscope that supports the entire instrument
🗑
Coarse Focus Knob   The large knob that moves the stage up or down in order to focus. It should never be used when the high power objective is in position
🗑
Condenser   The small cylindrical structure with chrome adjustment handle that is directly beneath the stage. Has a lens that focuses the light from the lamp.
🗑
Diaphragm   Regulates and controls the amount of light passing through the specimen (entering the slide through the hole in the stage). Found directly below the condenser. Controls the amount of light passing up from the lamp to the stage.
🗑
Fine Focus Knob   The smaller knob that moves the stage through very slight distances when focusing. Sharpens the image and provides exact focus
🗑
Lamp   The light source that is located on top of the base. Turned on and off by the power switch. There is a red wheel on the right side of the base that adjusts the intensity of the light.
🗑
Objectives   Contains lenses of different magnifications. Attached to revolving nosepiece.
🗑
Scanning Objective   4X lens (shortest). Observe and scan large areas
🗑
Low Power (L.P.) Objective   10X
🗑
High Power (H.P.) Objective   40X
🗑
Ocular (eyepiece)   Tops lens and uppermost part of the microscope. This lens magnifies 10X and it is also used for viewing the specimen. It has a pointer inside
🗑
Power Switch   A small toggle button at the back of the base that turns the microscopes lamp on/off
🗑
Revolving Nosepiece   Holds the objectives and allows them to be easily interchanged. Each objective clicks into place when ready for viewing.
🗑
Stage   A square, black platform located below the objective lenses. Supports the slide and contains an opening that admits light from the lamp
🗑
Stage Adjustment Knobs   2 knobs located underneath the stage on the left side of the microscope. Upper knob moves the stage forward and backward this moving your specimens image up/down. Lower knob moves the stage and image from side to side
🗑
Stage Clip   A silver arm on the top of the stage that holds a slide firmly in place against a silver plate
🗑

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.

To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.

You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.

Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
