What is the significance of the Fundamental Order of Connecticut?   Written in 1639, they were laws that extended voting rights to non-church members and limited the power of the governor. They also expanded the idea of representative government.

List the New England Colonies and why they were founded.   Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Colonist were in search of religious freedom and the puritans wanted to escape economic hard times in England such as high tax and religious persecution.

List the Middle Colonies.   New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

Why was New York founded?   Founded by the Dutch but King Charles sent out warships to fight and they gave it up.

Why was Pennsylvania founded?   King Charles the 2nd owed William Penn so in 1681, he gave it to him and the quakers.

Why was New Jersey founded?   The Duke of York gave part of his claim to his friends in the colonies and they encouraged settlers by promising freedom of religion and large land.

Why was Delaware founded?   Penn granted the three lower counties in this colony their own assembly and it broke away to it's own colony.

List the Southern Colonies.   South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia.

Why were South Carolina, North Carolina and Maryland founded?   For Roman Catholics and French protestants seeking religious freedom and fleeing persecution in England.

Why was Virginia founded?   To expand trade, it was an ideal place for farming, and there was profit from landsales.

Why was Georgia founded?   It was a reufge for debtors.
