Color Terms

| What is color? | an element of design |
| Why is it important? | for us to first be able to understand color so that we can begin to master the element of design |
| When does color occur? | when light in different wavelengths strikes our eyes |
| What is hue? | refers to the color itself and has a different reflected wavelength of light |
| What are the primary colors? | blue, red, yellow |
| What are the secondary colors? | violet, green, orange |
| What are the tertiary colors? | red-violet, blue-violet, blue-green,yellow-green, yellow-orange, red orange |
| What is the color wheel? | a combination of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors |
| What is a tint? | a saturated color that is mixed with pure white color |
| What is a shade? | a saturated color that is mixed with black color |
| Which colors are the warm colors on the color wheel? | red, orange, yellow |
| Which colors are the cool colors on the color wheel? | blue, green, violet |
| What are the neutral colors? | black, gray, white, brown, tan |
| What are the color harmonies? | monochromatic, analogous, complementary, triadic, split complementary, and neutral |
| What is a monatomic color harmony? | achieved by using tints and shades of only one color |
| What is analogous color harmony? | done by using three or more colors that are next to each other not he color wheel |
| What is complementary color harmony? | two colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel |
| What is triadic color harmony? | three colors that are located within equal distance of each other on the color wheel |
| What is split complementary harmony? | created by using any color and the two colors are located next to the colors that complement it |
| What is neutral harmony? | any combination of blacks, greys, whites, browns, tans |
