A brief description of the Chapter 2 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Ethernet Used to directly connect the computer to Internet through a cord.
Binary Code A code composed of 0s and 1s which is the code that allows us to view the data on the computer.
Byte Represents one alphabetic or numeric character. (Composed of 8 bits.)
Bit 1 binary character.
Processing Speed How fast the data of a computer is moved in and out of memory. (Hz)
Cache The computers temporary storage unit. A cache allows for quick access to the information.
USB Connections A fast connection to the computer that allows for the use of many devices. (Some are faster than others.)
Firewire A connection needed when there is a large amount of information that needs to be transferred.
Megahertz (MHz) One million cycles per second (Speed.)
Gigahertz (GHz) One billion cycles per second (Speed.)
Input Device A device used to input information into a computer. (i.e. mouse, keyboard, scanner.)
Output Device A device used to output information from the computer. (i.e. speakers, printers, iPods)
Storage Device A device used to store data. These devices can be internal or external.
Internal Storage Device A storage device which is built into the computer to store information on the computer itself. (i.e. Hard drive)
External Storage Device A storage device that is used to store information by downloading it onto a portable device that can be connected to any computer.
