The Nature of Law and Our Legal Environment

| Ethics | standards of fair and honest conduct applied to social behavior |
| Law | enforceable rules of conduct in a society |
| Legal duty | obligations or standards of conduct toward other persons that are enforceable by law |
| Natural rights | rights to which all persons are entitled because they are human beings, also known as moral rights |
| Political rights | constitutional rights of an individual to participate in government, including right to vote or to hold public office |
| Precedent | cases decided in the same state and in the same or higher court that provides an example or authority for deciding later cases involving identical or similar situations |
| Procedural law | defines legal rules or methods for processing civil and criminal cases through the court system |
| Statutory law | law created by a legislative body; may be at the local, state, or federal levels |
| Substantive law | law that defines duties, establishes rights, and prohibits wrongs |
| U.S. Constitution | document that consist of seven articles that provide a workable framework for our federal government |
| Unconstitutional | Law that conflicts with a constitution and is therefore invalid |
