Computer literacy (digital literacy) Having a current knowledge and understanding of computers and their uses.
Computer Electronic device, operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory.
Data Collection of unprocessed items, which can include text, numbers, images, audio and video.
Information Conveys meaning and is useful to people.
Information processing cycle Series of input, process, output, and storage activities.
Hardware Electric, electronic, and mechanical components.
Input Devices - examples Allows you to enter data and instructions into a computer. ex. keyboard, mouse, microphone, scanner, webcam.
Output Devices - examples Hardware components that convey information to one or more people. ex. printer, monitor, speakers.
Storage Devices - examples Records(writes) and/or retrieves(reads) items to and from storage media. ex. USB flashdrives, hard disks.
Hard Drive Provides much greater capacity than a USB flash drive.
Flash Drive Portable storage device that is small and lightweight enough to be transported on a keychain or in a pocket.
System Unit Case that contains the electronic of the computer that are used to process data.
Processor The electronic component that interprets and carries out the basic instructions that operate the computer.
Memory Consists of electronic components that store instructions that operate the computer.
Motherboard The circuitry of the system unit usually is part of or is connected to a circuit board.
Communication Devices Enables a computer to send and receive data instructions , and information to and from one or more computers or mobile devices.
Modem A widely used communications device.
Application software Consists of programs designed to make users more productive and/or assist them with personal tasks.
System software Interface between the user, the application software, and the computer's hardware.
Personal Computers - Desktop and notebooks Computer that can perform all of its input, processing, output, and storage activities by itself.
Mobile Computers Personal computer you can carry from place to place.
Tablet pc Special type of notebook computer that you can interact with by touching the screen with your finger or a digital pen.
Digital pen Looks like a small ink pen but uses pressure instead of ink.
Game consoles Mobiling computer device designed for single-player or multiplayer videogames.
Servers Controls access to the hardware,software,and other resources on a network and provides a centralized storage area for programs,data,and information.
Mainframe Computers Large,expensive,powerful computer that can handle hundreds or thousands of connected user simulataneously.
Supercomputers Fastest,most powerful computer and the most expensive.
Embedded computers Special-purpose computer that functions as a component in a larger product.
