| Best Fit | a way of resizing a column in which the width is automatically resized to fit the data in the column |
| Compacting | the act of rearranging how a database is stored on a disk. It optimizes performance |
| Database | a collection of objects that work together to store, retrieve, display, and summarize data |
| Database Management System (DBMS) | a program that allows you to store, retrieve, analyze, and print information |
| Datasheet | a table that displays data in rows and columns |
| Datasheet Selector | the box in the upper-left hand corner of a datasheet. It selects all the records and fields |
| Datasheet View | a viewing option in Access. The view allows for records to be entered and displays data in a datasheet format |
| Field | a subunit of a record. They appear as columns |
| Field Name | a heading that identifies a series of fields |
| Field Selector | a button at the top of each column. It is identified with a name and when clicked, selects that column |
| Field Value | the data entered into a field |
| Navigation Pane | a springboard that appears on the left side of the screen in Access. It lists the objects in the database |
| Record | a complete set of data |
| Record Selector | a button that appears to the left of the first field in a row. When clicked, it selects the entire record. |
