Behavioral Strategies for Dysphagia

QuestionAnswer
What are some behavioral strategies? Liquid wash, larger bolus, multiple swallows/bolus
Liquid Wash Used for residue after the swallow- oral, vallecular, pharyngeal wall, pyriform sinuses.....alternate bites of solids/semi-solids w sips of thin/thick liquids
Larger Bolus Used for delay triggering pharyngeal swallow....bc it enhances the sensory input in some patients
Multiple Swallows/Bolus Used for significant oropharyngeal residue....swallow 2-3 times w each bite/sip. rationale: decreases risk for asp by clearing residue before add'l bolus is attempted.
