Revision cards for AQA AS INFO2 Backup and Recovery

Six questions to ask when deciding on a backup strategy What will be backed up? What storage medium will be used? When will the backup be done? Who will do the backup? Where will the backup be stored? How often will the backup be done?
What is a recovery plan? A plan of what will be done in case of a disaster or needing to restore the backup
What is covered in a recovery plan? Who will do what, how the backup will be restored, arrangements for alternative hardware, equipment, accommodation and staff if needed
What is a periodic backup? A backup that happens at a set time
What are the 3 different types of periodic backup? Full backup - backing up all files Differential backup - backing up all files changed since the full backup Incremental backup - backing up all files changed since last backup, either full or incremental
What is a remote or online backup? Backup done to a remote server over the Internet
What is mirroring? Storing a database on multiple servers so if one fails the others can still be used without data loss (sometimes called RAID system)
What type of backup is needed for large database systems and why? Mirroring as they can't be taken offline for periodic backup and they can't afford to lose any data
