E-mail bestaat uit 3 componenten: User agents, Mail servers en Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). Gebruikers hebben...
Wanneer een berricht niet kan worden afgeleverd blijft deze in de message queue staan
SMTP maakt gebruik van (tcp verbinding type)... een persistent connection.
Op het moment dat er een tcp verbinding tussen twee mailservers is opgebouwd... vindt er een handshaking plaats en wordt er een berricht verstuurd.
HTTP is een pull protocol omdat... de client om de bestanden vraagt. SMTP is een push protocol omdat de server het bestand wil afleveren bij de client.
Bij SMTP moet alles ... gecodeerd worden. in 7-bit ASCII. een E-mail wordt volledig in één berricht verstuurd (dus inclusief bijlage).
Een client kan met de mailserver communiceren middels de protocollen: POP3 en IMAP
POP3: Pop3 is een simpel protocol die geen status van de gebruiker bij houdt. Hij weet alleen of een bericht gemarkeerd is of niet. Het protocol bevestigt alles met -OK of -ERR.
IMAP: IMAP houdt deze gegevens wel bij. Alle E-mails worden ook geassocieerd met een folder. Een client kan ook alleen alle MIME (de header) informatie ophalen om bandbreedte te verlagen. IMAP is meer complex.
Vaak is er ook een website beschikbaar waarmee E-mails verzonden kunnen worden. Dit gaat met HTTP maar via SMTP wordt het berricht toch uiteindelijk verstuurd.
FTP File Transfer Protocol
FTP gebruikt 2 TCP verbindingen: Control connection (poort 21) en Data connection (poort 20)
Omdat FTP 2 verbindingen gebruikt noemen we dit... out-of-band.
HTTP doet het in-band.
De data verbinding is.... non-persistant omdat hij per overdracht de tcp verbinding verbreekt.
De control sessie heeft een... state, en houdt dus alle gegevens van de gebruiker bij. (dus tegenovergesteld dan bij HTTP)
Op alle commands die de client naar de server stuurt wordt er... een reply code ontvangen ter bevestiging.
