| Floating Superficial Pulse | pulse can be felt with light palpation but is relatively weak with deep palpation |
| Indications for Floating pulse | Ext (superficial) syndrome Xu syndrome (yang qi floating out)pulse floating, large and weak, seen in prolonged illness and weakened condition |
| Sinking, deep pulse | pulse is felt only with heavy pressure |
| Indication of Sinking deep pulse | Deep and forceful - interior excess syndrome, Deep and weak - interior xu syndrome |
| Slow pulse | the rate is slow with less than 4 BPB |
| Indications for slow pulse | Slow and forceful-excess cold syndrome, Slow and weak - Xu cold syndrome (yang syndrome) |
| Rapid pulse | the rate is fast, with more than 5 BPB |
| Indications for rapid pulse | Heat syndrome: Rapid and forceful - excess heat, Rapid and weak - Xu heat (Yin Xu) |
| Swift pulse | the rate is very fast 7-8 BPB Indicates extreme heat and Yin exhaust, approaching Qi collapse |
| Empty pulse | the pulse is felt weak at all 3 levels |
| Indications for empty pulse | Xu syndrome: Qi Xu (Pfads), Bld Xu (5 pales), empty-slow pulse spontaneous sweating cold limbs, likes warmth swollen tongue-yang Xu, Empty rapid pulse night sweating malar flush red tongue w/little coating or no coating --Yin Xu |
