Terms used in Word 2003
| Term | Definition |

| Title Bar | Displays the name of the active file and contains the minimise, maximise and close buttons. |
| Menu Bar | Holds all the functions grouped together into menus. |
| Standard Toolbar | Holds buttons that act as shortcuts to some of the most commonly used options. |
| Formatting Toolbar | Contains buttons that you can use to change the look of the text. |
| Toolbar Options | The button at the end of the toolbar that let you add or remove buttons. |
| Show Buttons on Two Rows | Displays the standard and formatting toolbars on separate rows. |
| Ruler Bar | Can be used as a quick way to insert tabs or changing margins. |
| Work Area | Is where the text for the document is typed. |
| Scroll Bars | Will allow you to move horizontally and vertically through a document. |
| Layout Buttons | These buttons will give you different views of the page, eg, print layout or normal. |
| Drawing Toolbar | Contains tools for drawing and colouring shapes and lines. |
| Status Bar | Displays what page you are on. |
| Task Pane | Contains recently opened files and shortcuts from the menu bar. |
| Enter Key | Pressing this key will move you down a line in the document. |
| Shift Key | Used in conjunction with a letter to make a capital letter. |
| Save As | Used to specify the name and location of a file. |
| Folder | Container for storing files. |
| File | This is created when you save a document in Word. |
| Delete Key | Will delete text to the right of the cursor. |
| Backspace Key | Deletes text to the left of the cursor. |
| Normal View | Screen only displays the text. |
| Print Layout View | Screen displays how the page will look look when printed. |
| Zoom | Adjusts the size of the display of the document on the screen. |
| Template | File that is used as the basis for another document. |
