Formula for "early-stage exterior disorders" Cong Chi Tang
Four BOLDED formulas for Wind-Cold-- plus one of his "when a you don't need a sledge hammer" favorite all purpose WC formulas... Ma Huang Tang, Gui Zhi Tang, Ge Gen Tang, Xiao QIng Long Tang. (And Xian Su San.)
Three BOLDED Wind-Heat formulas-- plus one for childhood measles that is not... Sang Ju Yin, Yin Qiao San, Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang. (And Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang.)
Two BOLDED (the only two) (Wind-Heat) formulas for Head & Neck symptoms Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao SAN. Cang Er Zi San.
The two BOLDED formulas for "Release Exterior Disorder with Interior Deficiency" Ren Shen Bai Du San. Jing Fang Bai Du San.
The two BOLDED formulas for "Release Exterior Disorder with Interior Deficiency": which one induces sweating and is used in patients with stronger constitution? Jing Fang Bai Du San
After the two BOLDED formulas for "Release Exterior Disorder with Interior Deficiency," there is a related formula for weaker patients (with Ren Shen and Zi Su Ye in it). What is it? Shen Su Yin
After the 3 Release the Exterior with Interior Deficiency formulas for various levels of Qi Xu, there are 2 additional ones: one for Yang Xu, one for Yin Xu. What are they? Ma Huang Xi Xin Fu Zi Tang and Jia Jian Wei Rui Tang.
Formulas that "Release Interior-Exterior Excess"... He said these are "corrective" formulas for when Exterior Conditions have been improperly treated. What are the two main ones? And what are their sub-categories? Major Buplureum Decoction (Da Chai Hu Tang), has Da Huang and Zhi Shi to "downbear and purge." Ge Gen Huang Lian Huang Qin Tang-- contains just what name says plus ZGC, for "Damp Heat in the LJ with Exterior Syndrome"
What is the difference between the TWO PURGING/Release the Exterior formulas, Da Chai Hu Tang and Fang Feng Tong Sheng Tang? Da Chai Hu Tang is for Shao Yang heat that is beginning to turn into Yang Ming (channel) heat. Fang Feng Tong Sheng Tang is for INTERIOR HEAT and EXTERIOR HEAT at the same time! It uses FRESH Da Huang and Mang Xiao to REALLY PURGE. "Not often used."
So what is Shi Gao Tang used for then? INTERIOR heat. EXTERIOR cold.
What Release the Exterior "corrective formula" contains the 3 Huang sisters PLUS Shi Gao & Zhi Zi to (REALLY) get rid of interior heat, and then Ma Huang and Dan Dou Chi to get rid of Wind Cold? Shi Gao Tang
What formula could we call the San Huang plus Gardenia, Gypsum and Prepared Soybean? Shi Gao Tang
Of the two "Release the Exterior and Clear the Interior" formulas, only Ge Gen Huang Lian Huang Qin Tang is bolded. Why? Ge Gen Huang Lian Huang Qin Tang is a more useful formula today because it is used for dysenteric diarrhea (foul smell, burning anus) to, with the help of Ge Gen, "raise the clear Yang and generate fluids"
Of the 4 "Release the Exterior with Pre-Existing Excess" formulas, which one is for Interior Heat & Exterior Heat at same time? Which is is for Interior Heat & Exterior Cold? Heat in both Interior & Exterior at same time is the "Sagely Unblock" one: Fang Feng Tong Sheng Tang. Interior heat with Exterior Cold is Gypsum Decoction: Shi Gao Tang
"Qi Level" heat: There are really just THREE basic formulas. What are they? Bai Hu Tang. Zhi Zi (Dou) Chi Tang. Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang.
"Qi Level" heat: Of the THREE basic formulas, one of them has no associated formulas (or modification). What is it and why is it so special? Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang. Bai Hu Tang is really only 2 herbs + licorice, rice. Zhi Zi Dou Chi Tang is EXACTLY 2 ingredients: gardenia, prepared soybean. Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang, OTOH, has Ren Shen (Qi/GF), MMD (GF), and Ban Xia (harmonize ST)-- + licorice rice.
"Qi Level" heat: There are really just THREE basic formulas. Since Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang is the only real 'formula,' what are things added to Bai Hu Tang (Shi Gao+Zhi Mu) and Zhi Zi (Dou) Chi Tang (Gardenia & Soybean) to spice things up? Bai Hu Ren Shen Tang. Bai Hu Cang Zhu Tang. Zhi Zi Gan Cao Chi Tang. Zhi Zi Sheng Jiang Chi Tang.
Friggin' Abscesses and Sores. Let's break it down: What are the 2 for internal use? And how might we differentiate between them? Reed Decoction (Wei Jing Tang) and Rhubarb and Moutan Decoction (Da Huang Mu Dan Tang.). We're going to say that Reed Decoction is for Lung Abscess; Rhubarb-Mouton is for early stage Appendicitis.
Friggin' Abscesses and Sores. Let's break it down: There are 4 for External use, but only one is BOLDED. Why is it called FIve Ingredient Drink to Eliminate Toxin? Wu Wei Xiao Du Yin contains four flowers and a seed: Forsythia, Dandelion, Violet, wild Chrysanthemum and "Heavenly Mallow Root" (Tian Kui Zi)
Friggin' Abscesses and Sores. Let's break it down: After the Four Flowers and the Heavenly Mallow Seed/Root, there is the Six Miracle Pill and the Balmy Yang Decoction. How to remember these? Six Miracle Pill (Liu Shen Wan) is for heat toxin in throat with swelling and blockage. The Balmy Yang Decoction is for Yin-type sores—or chronic, wet sores. Seems easy enough.
Now we're at CLEAR ORGAN HEAT. We have Lung, Lung, Lung, Stomach, Stomach, Stomach, "Heart," Liver, Bowel and Bowel. What are they all? Lung ones: Drain White, Maidservant (Way Be Dee), then Ephedra, Apricot, Gypsum, Licorice. Stomach ones: Drain Yellow, Clear Stomach, Jade Woman (You Knew John). Heart is Dao Chi San. Liver is LDXGT. Bowels are Shao Yao Tang & Bai Tou Weng Tang.
Clearing Nutritive Level heat should be easy, since there are only two. Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang adds Shao Yao and MDP to the Xi Jiao and SHENG Di Huang-- to COOL the blood (Sheng Di) and remove stasis (Chi Shao and MDP). Qing Ying Tang has Jin Yin Hua, Lian Qiao, Huang Lian and is more for "BLAZING" HEAT in Yang Ming.
Clear Heat, "Relieve Toxicity": These are the f&#@ up ones. Let's concentrate on the 3 BOLDED ones: Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity, Drain the Epigastrium, and Universal Benefit Drink to Eliminate Toxin. How to differentiate? Huang Lian Jie De Tang has the 3 Huangs plus Zhi Zi-- for "fire toxin in ALL THREE BURNERS." Xie Xin Tang has the first 2 Huangs but Da Huang instead of Huang Bai. Pu Ji Ziao Du Yin has way too many herbs and is for "acute massive febrile d/o of the head"
What are the commonalties between Xie Xin Tang and Huang Lian Jie Du Tang? They both contain Huang Qin and Huang Lian
What are the differences between Xie Xin Tang and Huang Lian Jie Du Tang? Xie Xin Tang has only 3 herbs! Its third "Huang" is Da Huang (not Huang Bai, as in Huang Lian Jie Du Tang). Plus, Huang Lian Jie De Tang has Zhi Zi-- probably as its chief herb, since the indication is "Severe obstruction of all 3 burners by Fire Toxin"
