Hardware Basics

System Software a part of each computer system. tells the computer what to do. (Windows, Mac)
Application Software allows the computer to carry out specific function like word processing, creation of databases and spreadsheets...
computer system computer and other support devises that work as a team to receive information as the user inputs it, process that information per the directions that the user defines, and output the information in a usable format.
central processing unit processing of information takes place
control unit retrieves instructions and sends command signals to the rest of the computer system to tell them what to do.
arithmetic logic unit Sector of the CPU that performs the mathematical calculations that are required in many data processing programs
memory unit allows storage of information, is internal to the computer and is divided into RAM and ROM
RAM temporary memory that is designed to hold new data and is available only while the computer is turned on.
ROM Read only memory
Binary coding system called ASCII is made p of a series of zeros and ones.
Byte Eight bits make it, can represent on alphabetic or one numeric character of information
Bit A binary character that is the smallest unit of binary information
Pixel a single covered square on the screen
keyguard hard plastic covers with holes for each key. prevents someone fromm striking unwanted keys.
