What is a computer system? The computer and other support devices that work as a team to receive the information as the user inputs it, process that information per the directions that the user defines, and output the information in a usable format.
What is the central processing unit (CPU)? Often referred to as the processor
What is the control unit? It retrieves the instructions and sends command signals to the rest of the computer system to tell them what to do.
What is the arithmetic logic unit? The sector of the CPU that preforms the mathematical calculations that are required in many data processing programs.
What is a RAM? The temporary memory that is designed to hold new data and is available only while the computer is turned on.
What is a ROM? The permanent internal memory inside the system, is inaccessible by the user, and is used to store the instructions thats are installed or programmed at the manufacturer.
What is a bit? Smallest unit of binary information.
What are input devices? Allows the input of data into the computer
What is a pixel? A single colored square on the screen.
What are storage devices? Allows storage of data for later use.
What is a hard disk drives? Holds large amounts of information and is significant in the purchasing decision of a new computer decision.
What are CD-ROMs? (Compact disk-read only memory) are removable and hold about 650 MB of information. You cannot add new information they are readable only.
What is a CD-R? (Compact-disc-recordable) allows the user to record data once for storage purposes; after information is recorded it cannot be edited.
What is a CD-RW? (Compact disc-rewritable), allows the recording of data but also allows the user to edit the information after disc creation.
What is application software? Allows the computer to carry out specific functions, such as word processing, creation of databases and spreadsheets, and so on.
