Control Unit Unit in CPU that retrieves the instructions and sends command signals to the rest of the computer system to tell them what to do.

Memory Unit Unit in CPU that allows storage of information, is internal to the computer, and is divided into two types of memory: RAM (random access memory) and ROM (read-only memory).
Cache Provides a temporary storage area that provides quick access to information.
Central processing unit (CPU) Located inside the computer body in the form of computer chips which processes information and is composed of three units that work together to process info.
Binary coding system (ASCII) American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a code made up of a series of zeros and ones.
Bit Binary character that is the smallest unit of binary information.
Byte Eight bits make up a byte which can represent on alphabetic or numeric character of information.
Arithmetic logic unit The sector of the CPU that performs the mathematical calculations that are required in many data processing programs.
Input devices Allow the input of data into the computer.
Peripheral devices Necessary for a computer system to (1) input the information, (2) output the information into a form that is easily read by the user, or (3) store the information for later use.
Interactive whiteboard When connected to a computer, the screen captures everything written or drawn on its surface which can later be transferred tot he computer and printed.
Megahertz Processor speed is expressed in megahertz, which equals one million cycles per second.
Gigahertz Processor speed is expressed in gigahertz, which equals one billion cycles per second.
Optical character recognition (OCR) Software for converting text.
