Central Processing Unit (CPU) Where the processing of the information takes place in the computer
Random Access Memory (RAM) A temporary memory that is designed to hold new data and is available only while the computer is turned on
Megahertz (MHz) What the processor speed in expressed in. It equals one million cycles per second
Gigahertz (GHz) What the processor speed is expressed in. It equals one billion cycles per second.
Bit The smallest unit of binary information
Classroom Response System A handheld device that resembles a TV remote that allows students to respond to questions posed by the instructor
Monitor Size Measured diagonally from corner to corner
Resolution Defines the clarity of the image that is seen on the computer screen
Pixel A single colored square on the screen
Dots Per Inch (DPI) How the resolution is measured in a printer
Lumens How the brightness of a data projection unit is measured
Port The opening that is used as the connection for a device, such as a printer or a scanner, to communicate with the computer system
Application Software Allows the computer to carry out specific functions such as word processing, creation of databases and spreadsheets
Alternative Labels Labels that are taped or glued to the top of frequently used keys on the standard keyboard
Switches Used as an alternative to a keyboard. Generally activated by one or two movements
