| Plot | a series of events; what happens in a story |
| Four parts of plot | basic situation, series of events, climax, resolution |
| basic situation | who are the characters and what do they want |
| Conflict | the problem or struggle |
| external conflict | a character struggles against another person, group, or force of nature (like a bear or a tornado) |
| internal conflict | character's struggle takes place in his or her mind |
| foreshadow | clues or hints about future events in the plot |
| series of events | what takes place in the story as the character attempts to solve the conflict |
| complications | difficulties the character faces that make it hard for the character to get what he or she wants |
| climax | the story's most emotional or suspenseful moment |
| resolution | the last part of the story, all the loose ends of the plot are tied up and the story is closed |
