Computer Anatomy

Computer A machine that can be programmed.Invented in the 1940's.
Personal Computer A personal computer is a PC that comes with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
Hardware The computer and all attached equipment are called hardware.Example: Speakers
Software Software is a set of instructions for the computer that has the ability to change or create data.
Monitor A display screen.
Mouse An input device.It moves the curser on the monitor.
Keyboard The Keyboard is a set of keys or buttons that are used to input info and instructions to a computer.
Hard Drive The hard drive is the primary storage unit of the computer and it is stored on a magnetic cylinder.
CDROM CDROM is a compact disk (Read Only Memory)
CDROM Drive A box that lets the computer read the CD.
Data Pieces of information that software can change.
Program Another word for software. A list of instructions.
Operating System Tells programs what do do.
Bios Wakes up the computer.
Mother Board The motherboard holds all of the circut board.
CPU Central processing unit. The brain of the computer.
Rom Read only memory. Has good memory.
Ram Random acess memory. Reads and writes.
Power Supply Gets electricity into the computer.
Modem Connet computers to each other.
Port Hardware plugs into it;like keyboard, and mouse.
Video Card Allows graphics to be displayed on the monitor.
Power Plug Used to provide power in to the computer and provide power out to the monitor.
Parallel Port A parallel port is an electical connector that is used to send information on wires at the same time to a printer.
Serial Port Used to connect older or specialized devices.
Network Interface Card An ethernet cable connection.
Universal Serial Bus Universal serial bus or usb is and external bus that transfers mbps.
