computer. A machine that can be programed.Invented in the 1940's.
personal computer. PC that comes with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
hardware. All attached aquipment are called hardware.
software. Set of instructions for the computer that has the ability to change or create data.
monitor. A display screen.
mouse. An input device. It moves the curser on the monitor.
keyboard. Set of keys or buttons that are used to input information and instructions to a computer.
hard drive. The hard drive is the primary storage unit for the computer. Stored on magnetic cylinders.
CDROM. Compact disc that reads only memory.
CDROM drive. Small box that lets the computer read the CD. Uses a laser to read CDs. It looks for pits and flats.
data. Pieces of information. That software can change.
program. Another word for software.A list of instructions.
Operating System. Tells programs what to do.
BIOS. Wakes up the computer.
Motherboard. Holds all cuircut bosrds together.
CPU. The brain of the computer. CPU=Central Processing Unit.
RAM. Random access memory. Reads And Writes.
ROM . Read only memory. Only Reads.
Power Supply. Gets electricity into the computer.
Modem. Connects computers to eachother.
Port. Hardware plugs into it; like keyboard, mouse.
Video Card. Allows graphics to be displayed on the monitor.
Power Plug. Used to provide power in to the computer and provide power out to the monitor.
Parallel Port. An electical connector that is used to send information on wires at the same time to a printer.
Serial Port. Used to connect older or specialized devices.
Network Interface Card. An Ethernet cable connection.
Universal Serial Bus. Universal Serial Bus or USB is an external bus that transfers MBPS. (mega bytes per seconds.).
