Figurative Language

Identify Literary Devices and Figurative Language

QuestionAnswer
Simile A comparison using like or as.
Metaphor A comparison NOT using like or as.
Main Idea Important information that indicates the overall idea.
Mood The feeling the reader gets after reading.
Tone The writer's attitude towards his or her subject.
Speaker Who is speaking. (Not always the author.)
Point of view First person, second person, or third person.
Inference A guess about the text based on textual evidence and the reader's prior knowledge.
Rhyme Scheme The pattern in which rhyming occurs.
