5. Cellulosic fibers come from plants. Name 2 examples. Cotton and linen and also straw and juet.
6. Protein fibers come from animals. Name 2 examples. Wool and silk.
7. What is the seed pod of the cotton plant called? The pod is called a bolls.
8. What machine is used to separate the seeds from the cotton? To seperate the seeds from the cotton they use a mechanical stripper or picker.
9. Combing produces a higher quality cotton fiber. Name the 2 types of higher quality cotton. Two types od high quality cotton are pima and egyptian.
10. Name 3 advantages of cotton fabric. It is inexpensive, soft and absorbent and also comfortable.
11. Name 1 disadvantage of cotton fabric. It wrinkles very easily.
12. Linen comes from the stem of the flax plant. Why is it more expensive than cotton? This is because linen production requires more hand labor and that is why it is more expensive.
13. Name 1 advantage of linen. Linen is very strong.
14. Name 1 disadvantage of linen. Linen can develop holes.
15. Wool comes from the fleece of the sheep. When are sheep sheared? Sheep are sheared in the spring.
16. Name 2 advantages of wool. Wool is easy to tailor and it is water resistant.
17. Name 2 disadvantages of wool. Wool is harmed by bleach and it absorbs odors.
18. Which type of wool has short fibers? Woolen has short fibers.
19. Which type of wool has long fibers? Worsted has long fibers.
20. Define virgin or pure wool. Virgin or pure wool use fibers that have never been used before.
21. What is the science of sericulture? Sericulture is the science of silk.
22. What do silkworms eat to make silk? They eat mulberry leaves.
23. Silk is the only natural filament fabric. What is a filament? A filament is a continuous long strand.
24. What are the two types of silk? Two types of silk are raw silk and cultivated silk.
