Litetary Terms Definitions

QuestionAnswer
Setting Where a story takes place.
Mood The atmosphere , and is usually determined by the setting
Theme The lesson or message of a story
Conflict A problem without a conflict is not a story
Internal Conflict a struggle with ones self; a person must make a decisions
person .vs. self A character must make a difficult choice
External Conflict A struggle with one out of force
Man .vs. Man A Problem between two people or two groups of people
Man .vs Fate Person has a problem facing his/her destiny
Man .vs. Society person in conflict with or struggling against any force or nature
Plot Sequence of events
Exposition Background information is given ; setting and main characters
Narrative Hook problem/main conflict is revealed
Rising Action all of the events leading to the climax
Climax Most exciting part of the story ; the turning point ; Antagonist Must make decisions
Falling Action All of the events leading to the conclusions or the end of the story
Conclusion THE END !
Narrator Telling the story ; Not always the author or the person who wrote the story
Tone Narrator/author attitude toward the story
Point Of View How a story is told, relationship between narrator and reader
1st Person uses I,me,my,our,us
3rd limited Uses He,She,They,Them
3rd Omniscient To hang talking about the past present and future
Characters People or animals in a short story
major main/most important characters
Protagonist The character the story most about the good guy
Antagonist The character that causes problems "good guy"
Minor The supporting or extra characters
Dynamic Character Character whose ,attitude, beliefs, in a story
Static Character DO NOT CHANGE change attitudes
Flat Characters is a character who was only on limit personality traits
round character who has many personality traits
indirect characterization person of a character is revealed through the characters thoughts comments action
direct characterization tell the reader about the personality of the character
Symbol Something that stands for or represents something else
Irony Difference between appearance and reality, when what is expected
Foreshadowing Hints about what will happen later in the story
Suspense Quality is a story that keeps you interested
