Chapter 11 Building Structure

Roof purpose is to prevent penetration of water and natural elements
Flat roofs or built up roofs moisture barrier laid down as a base, insulation is then added, then covered with a surface layer (ballast)
Ballast helps reduce ultraviolet light damage, provides weight to keep the protective layer and insulation in place, and provide a degree of fire protection

Cable Elevators car moves up and down with the help of the motor, cables, and counterweights
Hydraulic Elevators car is mounted on top of a giant piston inside a cylinder at the bottom of the shaft. pump forces fluid into the cylinder, displacing the piston and causing the elevator car to rise
Concrete crazing fine, hairline cracks caused by shrinkage
concrete leaching caused by frequent water migration
freezing and thawing of concrete repeated freezing and thawing can cause progressive cracking and damage
Sheet flow uniform flow of water across a surface (Can cause erosion)
open channel flow water directed into a defined channel or ditch
gray water comes from selected areas of the property, water is clarified to remove solids and disinfected through chlorination or by way of ultraviolet light
