Bi means: Blockage
Pain comes from what? Pain comes from Obstruction
Where there is obstruction, what will you find? Pain
What are the two major etiology and pathogenesis of Bi syndrome? 1. Attack of pathogenic factors. 2. Heat constitution.
Describe Attack of pathogenic factors in bi Syndrome? A. Invasion by pathogenic wind, cold and damp. B. or Dysfunction of the pores, and weakness of Yang QI.
Describe Heat constitution in Bi Syndrome: - Accumulation of heat - Exuberant Yang Qi - Long standing wind, cold and damp Bi
What are other possible etiology and pathogenesis of Bi syndrome? 1. Disharmony between Ying & Wei, QI and Blood. 2. Internal injury of Zang Fu. 3. Internal production of phlegm, turbidity and blood stasis.
What are the possible symptoms of Bi syndrome?
Describe Sx of Pain: Pain: cold pain (sharp), heat pain, blood stasis pain, phlegm damp pain, Yang xu pain.

What is fever with alternating chills? Shaoyang syndrome
Chills without fever is what? Yang xu
Describe Sx of Numbness: Numbness and tingling; Cold damp stagnation, phlegm-stasis stagnation, qi and blood xu.
Describe Sx of Limited range of motion: cold damp, damp-heat, phlegm stasis, qi and blood xu, liver and Kidney xu.
Describe Sx of Profuse Sweating: Profuse sweating: wind-damp, disharmony between Ying and Wei, Damp heat, heat in Qi level, Qi xo, Yang xu, Yin xu.
Describe disharmony between Ying and Wei: Wei qi stronger than ying Qi and pushing out sweat through pores.
Describe Sx of Tough skin: Tough skin: damp heat, heat in Ying level, stagnant heat in vessels
Describe Sx of Erythena (red patches on skin. Lupus): Erythena: Wind heat, heat in the ying level, stagnant heat in vessels.
Describe Sx of Subcutaneous nodules: Subcutaneous nodules, damp heat, cold damp, phlegm stasis.
Describe Sx of Morning stiffness: morning stiffness: cold damp, damp heat, turbidity, stasis, (RA, OA)
Describe Sx of Chills and aversion to wind: Chills and aversion to wind, wind cold, wind cold damp Qi xu, Yang Xu.
What is the most important Sx of Bi syndrome? Pain
What are the patterns of Bi syndrome? Wandering, Painful, Fixed, Heat
Describe Wandering Bi, (Xing Bi) Caused chiefly by pathogenic wind, wandering BI is characterized by migrating pain.
Describe Painful Bi (tong Bi) Caused chiefly by pathogenic cold. Painful BI is characterized by severe pain or stabbing pain alleviated by warmth and aggravated by cold.
Describe Fixed Bi (zhuo Bi) Caused chiefly by pathogenic damp. Fixed Bi is characterized by marked soreness, numbness and heaviness, aggravated on cloudy and rainy days.
Describe Heat Bi (re Bi) Heat BI is characterized by heat manifestations and sudden onset.
What are the four differentiations of Bi Syndrome? 1. Etiology, 2. Tissues, 3. Five Organs, 4. Manifestations
What are the differentiations according to Etiology: 1, WInd Bi 2. Cold Bi 3. Damp Bi, 4. Heat Bi. 5. Dry Bi. 6. WInd cold damp Bi 7. Damp heat bi.
What are the two multiple manifestation Bi syndromes? Wind cold damp Bi and Damp heat bi.
Describe the etiology of Wind Bi: Mainly caused by wind due to Wei Qi Xu. Skin, muscle, joint and meridians at the upper part of the body are frequently involved.
Sx of Wind Bi: mobile pain.
Describe the etiology of Cold Bi Mainly caused by cold due to Yang Qi Xu. Limbs and joints are often involved,
Sx severe pain and spasm.
Describe the etiology of Damp Bi Mainly caused by damp invasion into the muscles, joints and body due to spleen Xu.
Sx of Cold Bi swelling, heaviness and numbness.
Describe the etiology of Heat Bi Caused by heat or damp heat or transformed from chronic wind cold damp. Internal invasion
Sx of Heat Bi: redness, swelling, hot pain and tenderness. Severe cases may present general fever and limited range of motion.
Describe the etiology of Dry Bi Mainly caused by dryness or Yin fluids damage due to extreme heat leading to the failure of nourishment to the joints and muscles.
Sx of Dry Bi muscle atrophy, decreased joint mobility and general dryness.
Describe the etiology of Wind Cold Damp Bi Caused by wind damp invasion. If named as Wind Damp Bi, mainly caused by wind damp. If named Cold Damp Bi, mainly caused by cold damp.
Describe the etiology of Damp Heat Bi Caused by damp heat invasion or transformed from damp-cold bi or wind damp bi due to heat constitution.
What are the differentiations according to affected tissues? 1. Skin Bi 2. Muscle Bi. 3. Vessel Bi. 4. Tendon Bi. 5. Bone Bi.
Describe the etiology of Skin Bi : Caused by wind damp dry invasion in the skin and pores;
Sx of Skin Bi :numbness, tingling, tightness or hardness on the skin along with decreased joint mobility.
Describe the etiology of Muscle Bi: Caused by wind cold damp blocked in the muscles;
Sx of Muscle Bi: Feature soreness, aches, heaviness or numbness of muscles; Lingering conditions may lead to muscle atrophy and decreased joint motility. Fibromyalgia
Describe the etiology of Vessel Bi: Caused by wind cold damp heat invasion to the vessels and collaterals.
Sx of Vessel Bi: Feature with purple or dark skin, numbness or pain in the involved area.
Describe the etiology of Tendon Bi. Caused by wind cold damp heat blocked in the tendons and sinews.
Sx of Tendon Bi. Pain and spasm of tendons, difficult joint motions.
Describe the etiology of Bone Bi. Caused by wind cold damp heat invasion in to the bones.
Sx of Bone Bi. Heaviness and soreness inside the bones, decreased joint mobility, limited range of motions. Bone and joint deformity and muscle atrophy may present in severe and long term cases.
What are the differentiations according to Five Organs? The Zang organs. 1. Heart Bi 2. Lung Bi, 3. Spleen Bi. 4. Liver Bi. 5. Kidney Bi.
Describe the etiology of Heart Bi: Caused by long duration of Vessel Bi plus EPI invasion to the heart, leading to blockage of heart vessel.
