MS Word Lesson 1 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Compatibility The ability to work with another program or hardware device.
Current document The document currently open and active. Actions and commands will affect the current document.
Default A standard setting or mode of operation.
Elements Menus, icons, and other items that are part of an on-screen interface.
Format Arrange and enhance the contents of a document to improve its appearance.
Hardware Computes, printers, and other devices.
Hyperlink Text or graphics set up to provide a direct connection with a destination location. When you click a hyperlink, the destination is displayed.
Icon A picture used to identify an element on-screen , such as a Ribon button.
Insertion point The flashing vertical line that indicates where the next action will occur in a document or file on-screen.
Menu A list of commands or choices.
Mouse A device that allows you to select items on-screen by pointing at them with the mouse pointer.
Mouse pad A smooth, cushioned surface on which you slide the mouse.
Pointer A marker on your computer screen that moves in response to the movements of a pointing device such as a mouse or touchpad. It indicates where the next action will occur. The pointer changes shape depending on the current action.
Pointing device A device such as a mouse or touchpad that allows you to control the movement of a pointer on the screen in order to select items and commands.
Ribbon A screen element that displays buttons for accessing Office features and commands.
Scroll wheel A wheel on some pointing devices used to navigate through a document on screen.
Software Programs that provide the instructions for a computer or other hardware device
Software Suite A group of software programs sold as a single unit. Usually the programs have common features that make it easy to integrate and share data.
Toolbar A row of buttons used to select features and commands.
Window The are on-screen where a program or document is displayed.
Word Processing The act of creating text-based documents.
