QuestionAnswer
Hard return Tap the enter key at the end of a paragraph to move to the next line.
Operating system Software that allows the user to communicate with the computer in order to run other software and perform basic tasks.
Window An area on the screen where the user interacts with the software; the application interface.
Title Bar Located at the top of the window and contains the quick access toolbar, the title of the document, the application name, etc.
Quick access toolbar Icons at the left of the title bar.
Application software A computer program designed to perform specific types of tasks. We use Microsoft Office.
Default setting The settings the creator of the program set to be used when you first open a document.
File A collection of related data stored on a lasting medium -- the daily document is an example of a file.
File name Unique name for a file.
Folder A group of related files.
Contextual tab Appears above the tab name (on the ribbon) when performing certain tasks. Ex. Table tools appears when working with tables.
Dialog box launcher Button at the right edge of a group name on the ribbon; opens another window with additional options. Looks like an arrow.
Navigation pane When using "Save As" feature, the left side that shows folders and locations. When you click a folder in the navigation pane, its contents show in the right pane.
Status bar Located at the bottom of a window; displays information about a document, like the number of pages, number of words, etc.
Ribbon At the top of a Microsoft Office screen, includes tabs, groups, and buttons.
Ruler Horizontal (at top of window) and vertical (on left side of window) rules help you see the page layout. To display, click "ruler" icon above scroll arrow on right side of window.
Selected text Text that is highlighted; will be replaced if you key new information or use the paste option.
Task Bar Located at the bottom of the screen; displays buttons for each open file.
Single Space Abbreviated SS, vertical single spacing, no extra space between lines of text. When set for SS, tap enter key once or use wordwrap.
Double Space Abbreviated DS; vertical double spacing, one blank line between lines of text; When set for SS, tab enter key 2 times.
Desktop Your main work area - the monitor screen.
Icons Picture symbols representing programs, documents, and/or actions.
Save Places the document on a disk in one of the computer's disk drives; use floppy icon on quick access toolbar or "save" on file tab.
Save as Saves an additional copy of the document - used to revise a document when you want to retain the original. Will have a different name.
Point Move mouse so it points to an item.
Click Press left mouse button once and let it go.
Double-click Press left mouse button twice quickly and let go.
Right-click Press right mouse button once and let go; displays a menu of actions.
Drag Press and hold down the left mouse button and move pointer to another location.
Right drag Press and hold down the right mouse button and move pointer to another location
Spacing after a period (.) Space 0 times after period within abbreviations (ex: i.e.) Space once after period following abbreviations and initials (ex: hr.) Space 2 times after period at end of sentence.
Spacing after semicolon (;) Space once after semicolon within sentence.
Spacing after comma (,) Space once after a comma used as punctuation.
