Fiction | Prose writing that involves imaginary events and/or people. |
Nonfiction | Prose writing that is based on facts, real people and real events. |
Novel | Fictitious prose narrative of book length. |
Narrative | A spoken or written account of connected events. |
Plot | The sequence of events that take you through a story. |
Beginning Exposition | A narrative device, often used at the beginning of a work, that provides necessary background information about the characters and their circumstances. |
Rising Action | Events that increase the tension in a story. |
Climax | Highest point of tension in the story (the turning point). This is usually the point at which the eventual outcome will be revealed. |
Falling Action | Events that follow the climax in which tension decreases. |
Resolution | The conclusion of a plot’s conflicts and complications. |
Theme | The main idea of a literary work. |
