Introductory Vocabulary in Computers

Definition of Operating System The "brains" of a computer such as Mac OSX
Definition of Multimedia Audio and video controller such as iTunes
Definition of Desktop Publishing Creating professional high quality documents that can't be made in the Word Processing Software such as Publisher
Definition of Word Processor A software that we can use to create an informational document such as Pages
Definition of Spreadsheet A program that looks like graph paper and can manipulate the rows and columns that are used in calculations such as Numbers
Definition of Presentation Software A software like slideshow in sequence. It can be featured with graphics and audible video and could be showed to a public audience such as Keynote
Definition of Application A software program that lets you complete many different kinds of tasks such as Finder, Pages, Safari, iWeb, Twitter
Definition of Icon Picture that allows you to click on it and go straight to an application, folder, file, etc. such as Skype, iChat, and Firefox
Definition of Folder An icon used for organizing related files and documents such as a homework folder
Definition of Finder A software that helps you to locate documents and all sorts of stuff such as putting files into files
Definition of Dock A visual, convenient tray where you put commonly used programs such as Firefox, Photobooth, etc.
Definition of Spotlight A searching feature that can find anything on the computer such as websites that you went to previously
