What is a prime mover? | This is the muscle which contracts to make a movement occur. It is also known as the agonist. For example, when bending (flexing) the knee the hamstring muscles are the agonists which are responsible for this movement. |
What is an agonist? | This is the muscle which contracts to make a movement occur. It is also known as the prime mover. When straightening (extending) the knee the quadriceps are the agonists which are responsible for this movement. |
What is a synergist? | This muscle helps the agonist carry out the required movement and 'neutralises' any extra movement at the joint in the wrong direction. (Synergy means working together). |
