8-bit refers to digital image quality produces 256 shades of gray
16-bit refers to digital image quality produces 65,000 shades of gray
48-bit related to image quality, refers to three color layers (RGB) that each contain 16-bits per channel
Resolution related to the output in dpi that affects the printed image. This is built into the camera. 240 dpi yields an 8x12 image
Adjustment layers layers allow you to make adjustments to the image without changing the original image file

Black & White this is a layer that mask all of the color information from the original image
Levels this layer allows manipulation of the tonal qualities of the image
Histogram a graph that visually represents the 256 tonal gradations of the image
Gray slider located on the value bar, this slider sets the midpoint of the values in relation to the histogram. moving this slider changes the overall exposure
Input end sliders located on the value bar as the gray slider, these are used to increase the contrast of the image
Output end sliders located below the value bar, these sliders are used to lower the contrast of the image
Curves this layer allows for refinement of value and contrast of the different parts of the tonal scale
How can you lighten the overall exposure? Levels- middle gray left Curves- B&W to the upper left corner
How can you darken the overall exposure? Levels- middle gray right Curves- B&W to the lower right corner
How can you increase the overall contrast? Levels- upper B&W to center Curves- B&W to vertical center
How can you decrease the overall contrast? Levels- lower B&W to center Curves- B&W to horizontal center
How do you darken the lights? Levels- lower white to center Curves- white to horizontal center
How do you lighten the darks? Levels- lower black to center Curves- black to horizontal center
How to you darken/clip the darks? Levels- upper black to center Curves- black to vertical center
How do you lighten/clip the lights? Levels- upper white to center Curves- white to vertical center
How do you increase contrast of tonal selections? Steepen the curve
How do you decrease the contrast of tonal selections? Flatten the curve
What is resampling? this is manipulating the dpi of an image to ensure proper printing
What is downsampling? this refers to deleting dpi information associated with the image
What is upsampling? this refers to increasing the dpi information associated with the image
What is digital spotting? this is a process in which the image can be "cleaned up" of the dust specs or any other unwanted distractions
What is sharpening? this process corrects the softening introduced by natural limitations of various capture devices
What is an unsharp mask? this is the tool used to sharpen an image
