Computer Network Terminology

Network interconnected computers that are all connected to each other and the main purpose is to share information between one computer to the next
LAN - Local Area Network normally in one building
MAN - Metropolitan Area Network connected between a couple of buildings - less than 30 miles apart
WAN - Wide Area Network anything over 30 miles apart - largest WAN is the Internet
Node anything physically connected to the network for example a printer or server
Communication Media how nodes are linked for example coaxial cables or fiber opic cables
Workstation personal home computer
Client any part of the network that gets the data - the client will talk to the host and ask for information
Host any part of the network that gives the data out - the host will give the client information
Server offers a lot of users access to the same information - example of something that would be on a server are Webpages
Ethernet card network card that allows you to connect to a cable modem
Telephone Network Interface Card network card that allows you to plug a telephone line in
Wireless card network card that allows you to connect without any cables
NIC - Network Interface Card special card that you install on your computer that allows you to plug either an ethernet or get wireless that you can connect to the network
Examples of nodes that connect to a network printer, server and computer
Examples of common communication medias coaxial cables, optical fiber, radio waves
