| What is the test used for? | Predict your risk of developing heart disease;monitors levels after the start of diet or exercise programs; determines whether or not prescription of the lipid-lowering drugs will be useful. |
| What type of specimen is used? | Blood! |
| Normal ranges are? | Less than 100 mg/dL |
| What do low levels indicate? | Malnutrition or malabsorption (inadequate absorption of nutrients from the intestinal tract). |
| What do high levels indicate? | Increased risk of atherosclerotic heart disease or familial hyperlipoproteinemia (high levels of LDL at birth; genetic). |
