LDL

Cholesterol Testing

QuestionAnswer
What does LDL stand for? Low-density lipoprotein.
What is the test used for? Predict your risk of developing heart disease;monitors levels after the start of diet or exercise programs; determines whether or not prescription of the lipid-lowering drugs will be useful.
What type of specimen is used? Blood!
Normal ranges are? Less than 100 mg/dL
What do low levels indicate? Malnutrition or malabsorption (inadequate absorption of nutrients from the intestinal tract).
What do high levels indicate? Increased risk of atherosclerotic heart disease or familial hyperlipoproteinemia (high levels of LDL at birth; genetic).
