Computer Vocab

Computer and Internet Vocabulary

WordsDescription
Keyboard The part of the computer with letter and number buttons that you use for typing.
Mouse What you use to move the arrow around the computer screen. You can use the buttons to choose things on the screen. Can you tell why it's called a mouse?
Cursor The arrow or little glashing line on your computer screen that points to things the mouse is used to move the cursor
Monitor The computer screen where you see words, pictures, and videos.
Laptop A small computer that is easy to move and carry. It has the computer, monitor, mouse, and keyboard all together.
Internet A world wide system of millions of computers that are connected together in a network.
Cyberspace The world that connects computers in the Internet.
Internet Address Just like your home address it a group of letters and numbers combined to send your computer to a certian place on the Internet.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator) Just a fancy way to say Internet Address.
Website A place you visit on the internet that has stuff to read and see. It can contain fun and useful information, but be catious because some are not safe.
Instant Messaging Messages you exchange back and forth with a friend through a special program.
Chatroom A place to "talk through typing" with other people from around the world. But be careful. Not everybody is who they say they are.
E-mail (electronic mail) A letter you send through cyber space. People love it because it doesn't require any stamps!
Bulletin Boardas or Message Boards A place on the Internet where you post information for other people to see, usually about a specific topic.
Username A name you choose for yourself when exploring the web. It identifies you without telling strangers your real name.
Screen name A username in a chatroom. A screen name should never, ever say who you are or give out any personal information about who you are.
SPAM Junk mail sent to your e-mail box that usually advertising something. Don't open or respond to SPAM because it can cause problems for your computer.
Virus A hidden computer program that sneaks into your computer through e-mail or the Internet. Viruses can really hurt your computer, and you can accidently send them on to other people without even knowing it!
Password A secret word that only you and your guardian should know. You use it to check your e-mail and log onto websites.
