Properties of routing

| What is a router's job? | The primary function is to send packets from one network to another. |
| What is an Autonomous System? | Is a group of IP routes under common control, ie; Independent Network. |
| Interior Gateway Protocol | Routes within an AS but not designed to route between AS |
| List of IGPs | OSPF, IS-IS, RIP and RIPv2, EIGRP |
| External Gateway Protocol | Used to route between autonomous systems |
| List of External Gateway Protocol | Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) |

| Convergence | Router notices changes, process the update and calculate new route, forwarding table is updated. |
