Figurative Language Terms

| Simile | A comparison of two things using the words like, as, or than- the objects should have something in common. The sea gleamed like a filed of sapphires. |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two things that does not the words like, as, or than-the objects should have something in common. |
| Hyperbole | An exaggeration- ex. He runs so fast, he could catch a bullet! |
| Onomatopoeia | A sound word- ex. buzz, swish, toot, creak, screech |
| Personification | Giving human qualities to ideas, objects, or animals. ex. The rock stubbornly refused to move. |
