Figurative Language Terms

TermDefinition
Simile A comparison of two things using the words like, as, or than- the objects should have something in common. The sea gleamed like a filed of sapphires.
Metaphor A comparison of two things that does not the words like, as, or than-the objects should have something in common.
Hyperbole An exaggeration- ex. He runs so fast, he could catch a bullet!
Onomatopoeia A sound word- ex. buzz, swish, toot, creak, screech
Personification Giving human qualities to ideas, objects, or animals. ex. The rock stubbornly refused to move.
