Vocabulary common in horse racing
Horse Racing Term | English Definition | Mandarin Equivalent |

apprentice | A trainee jockey. An apprentice will usually ride only flat races. | 学徒 |
backed | A 'backed' horse is one on which lots of bets have been placed. | 倾向 |
backward | A horse that is either too young or not fully fit. | 瘸 |
bet | A transaction in which monies are deposited or guaranteed. | 打赌 |
colors | Racing silks, the jacket and cap worn by jockeys. Silks can be generic and provided by the track or specific to one owner. | 颜色 |
dark horse | A horse whose chances of success are not known, and whose capabilities have not been made the subject of general comment or of wagers. | 黑暗马 |
derby | A stakes event for three-year-olds. | 德比 |
green | An inexperienced horse. | 无经验 |
race caller | the person who describes the race at a racecourse. | 种族访问者 |
Thoroughbred | Thoroughbred - a horse whose parentage traces back to the Arabian, Turk and Barb, and who has satisfied the rules and requirements of The Jockey Club | 纯血种马 |
