TermDefinition
abstraction a method to reduce processes to need-to-know information.
bandwidth the maximum amount of data that can be sent in a fixed amount of time.
blog an online journal which may include text, images, video, and more, detailing personal information or information on a particular topic.
browser software used to find information for review, retrieve the information, and display the information for the user.
cookie a small file on your computer that stores information shared between you and a website that you have visited.
DNS (Domain Name System) a system that translates domain names, such as gavirtualschool.org, into IP addresses that the Internet can use to route requests and information.
email (electronic mail) one method in which the Internet is used to send and receive messages electronically.
fault-tolerant system a system that can experience failures in its components but continues to operate properly.
homepage the start page of a website.
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) a language that defines the structure and pages of the Web.
HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) a protocol used for transferring information between web browsers and web servers.
IP address (Internet Protocol address) an address assigned to computers, routers, servers, and other devices connected to the Internet.
Internet a network of computers connecting public and private computer facilities, organizations, and individuals, allowing for interconnected access and communication.
Internet censorship the attempt to control or suppress what can be accessed, published, or viewed on the Internet by certain people.
Internet speed the rate at which data is transferred from a source system to a destination system.
latency the delay or amount of time it takes for a signal to reach its destination and return.
mail server a server that handles, manages, and runs email.
net neutrality the idea that Internet service providers, such as Comcast and Verizon, should treat all content flowing through their networks equally.
network redundancy a method for ensuring network availability in case of a network device or path failure.
privacy the degree to which others can see your work or information.
private when the owner of information or work controls who has access to the material they created.
protocol an agreed-upon set of rules that specifies the behavior of a system. Examples include HTTP, HTTPS, and IP.
public when the owner of information or work allows everyone to access and see it.
scalable system a system that continues to function well as usage increases.
server a computer that provides services or information, such as determining IP addresses or retrieving webpages, to client devices that request them.
social media online communities created to share information.
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) a protocol that helps ensure data is reliably delivered across a network.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator) the address of a webpage or other resource on the Internet.
web server a server that handles, manages, and runs one or more websites.
webpage one page of online information.
website a collection of connected webpages that provides information online.
WWW (World Wide Web) a system of websites and webpages around the world stored on server computers; it is one use of the Internet.
