Gladiators

Gladiator Notes

QuestionAnswer
Gladiator A slave combatant trained to fight against animals and other warriors for public entertainment in ancient Rome.
Amphitheater An oval or circular Roman entertainment facility, such as the famous Colosseum, featuring tiered seating around an open arena floor.
Ludus A specialized Roman training school or facility where gladiators lived, ate a carb-heavy barley diet, and learned combat.
Lanista The owner, buyer, and operational manager of a gladiator training school who made deals with game sponsors.
Murmillo A heavily armed gladiator type distinguished by a large rectangular shield and a helmet featuring a prominent fish crest.
Retiarius A light gladiator who wore minimal armor and fought defensively using only a fishing net and a three-pronged trident.
Third Servile War The major, unsuccessful slave rebellion against the Roman Republic that broke out from a training facility in Capua.
Spartacus The famous Thracian gladiator who escaped his training school and led an army of rebels on Mount Vesuvius.
Appian Way The historic Roman road where six thousand captured rebel slaves were crucified following the defeat of Spartacus.
Naumachia A massive, highly expensive mock naval battle featuring real warships staged in flooded arenas or artificial lakes.
Emperor Commodus The notorious Roman ruler who frequently competed as a gladiator in public arena games for self-entertainment.
Pollice Verso The Latin term for the "turned thumb" hand signal used by Roman crowds to decide whether a defeated gladiator lived or died.
