Thomas Edison The famous American scientist and inventor who developed the phonograph, motion picture camera, and practical incandescent lightbulb.
Menlo Park Edison's legendary laboratory complex and home estate in New Jersey, known famously as the world's first "invention factory."
Joseph Swan The British chemist who famously sued Edison for patent infringement over the simultaneous independent invention of the lightbulb.
Direct Current The type of electrical current (DC) that flows in one direction, aggressively promoted by Edison during his feud with Nikola Tesla.
Alternating Current The type of electric current (AC) backed by Nikola Tesla that eventually defeated Edison's system due to its long-distance efficiency.
Carbon Filament The thin, carbonized material used by Edison's laboratory teams inside a vacuum bulb to keep the light burning for hundreds of hours.
Phonograph The groundbreaking sound device invented by Edison that marks the world's very first machine capable of recording and playing back audio.
Kinetoscope An early motion picture machine designed by Edison's team that allowed individual viewers to watch moving film strips through a peephole.
War of the Currents The famous commercial rivalry during the late 1880s where Edison clashed with George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla over electrical power systems.
Patent A legal government grant giving an inventor exclusive rights to a device, which Edison famously collected over one thousand times.
The Wizard of Menlo Park The widespread public nickname given to Edison by reporters to celebrate his team's rapid stream of magical inventions.
General Electric The massive, high-yield modern conglomerate company formed in 1892 through the commercial merger of Edison's electric lighting businesses.
