Isaac Newton Notes

QuestionAnswer
Isaac Newton The English physicist and mathematician who formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation.
Universal Gravitation The classical inverse-square law predicting attraction between masses, measured by Henry Cavendish using a torsion balance.
Three-Body Problem The complex gravitational problem concerning the unpredictable movements of three massive space objects acting on each other.
Newton's Rings A circular interference pattern formed when light reflects between a convex lens and a flat glass plane.
Law of Cooling A thermodynamic rule stating that an object's rate of heat loss is proportional to its temperature difference from the environment.
Newton's Method A root-finding algorithm that uses an initial guess (x0) and a function's derivative to recursively locate zeroes.
Gottfried Leibniz The German mathematician who independently invented calculus and feuded with Newton over who was first.
Opticks The famous 1704 science treatise written by Newton that describes his experiments splitting white light with a prism.
Flat Diagonal Mirror The type of secondary mirror used inside a Newtonian reflecting telescope to redirect light out to the eyepiece.
General Scholium The title of the highly tested closing essay included at the end of Newton's masterwork, the Principia.
Shell Theorem A mathematical proof by Newton showing that a hollow symmetric sphere exerts no net gravitational force on objects inside.
Opposite Reaction The core idea of Newton's Third Law of Motion, stating that for every action there is an equal and opposite force.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
