resolution the end of the story where the loose ends are usually tied up
dynamic characters who change as people over the course of the text
static characters who do not change
flashback an interruption of the story to tell something that happened earlier
irony when the opposite of what you think is going to happen happens
narrator the person telling the story
plot sequence of events in a story
point of view the perspective the story is told in
first person point of view the character telling the story is in the story - uses I
third person limited outside narrator who can only hear the thoughts of one character
setting time and place of the story
theme a message about life or human nature conveyed by the work
autobiography when you write your own life story
biography when you write someone else's life story
memoir a true story about an important event or milestone in someone's life
allegory characters, settings, and events are used as symbols to deliver a deeper message - often political or spiritual
tone the writer's attitude toward his/her subject
mood the feeling the piece of writing gives the reader
forbidden phrase what I write on your paper if you write something babyish that I don't want you to use anymore
dystopia genre where the setting is oppressive, futuristic, and the main character tries to make change
fantasy literature that centers on magic and supernatural elements
science fiction literature that explores the impact of actual or imagine science, technology, and futuristic concepts
stereotype generalized belief about a specific group of people ignoring their individual uniqueness
alliteration the repetition of constant sounds at the beginning of words
ballad a narrative poem that tells a story with a setting, plot, and characters
dialect when people from a certain place speak a certain way
epic long narrative poem that tells the adventures of a hero
form how the poem looks on a page
free verse poem that doesn't rhyme
hyperbole an exaggeration for emphasis
idiom a descriptive expression that means something different from the combination of words that make it up
imagery appeals to the readers' five senses
metaphor direct comparison to two different things
ode a specific poem about a single subject
onomatopoeia the use of words whose sounds suggest their meanings
personification when human qualities are given to nonhuman things
pun a making a joke by exploiting the different possible meanings of words
simile comparison of two thing using like or as
symbol something that stands for something bigger than itself
