USS Cole The United States Navy destroyer heavily damaged in October 2000 by an al-Qaeda suicide boat bombing in Aden, Yemen.
The Pet Goat The short children's story being read aloud by President George W. Bush to second-graders when he was informed of the September 11 attacks.
Operation Neptune Spear The secret May 2011 United States Navy SEAL raid that successfully targeted and killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.
Operation Infinite Reach The 1898 cruise missile strikes ordered by Bill Clinton against training camps in Afghanistan and the al-Shifa factory in Sudan following embassy bombings.
Ayman al-Zawahiri The Egyptian physician and ideologue who co-founded Egyptian Islamic Jihad and succeeded bin Laden as leader before being killed in 2022.
Ali Soufan The prominent Lebanese-American FBI special agent who successfully interrogated high-level operatives and led the USS Cole bombing investigation.
Alec Station The specialized, virtual CIA tracker unit established in 1996 exclusively to monitor the activities and financial movements of Osama bin Laden.
Todd Beamer The heroic passenger who famously muttered "Let's roll" before leading a group to overpower the hijackers of United Flight 93 over Pennsylvania.
Adam Gadahn The American-born death metal musician from California who traveled overseas to become a prominent English-language media spokesperson for the network.
Richard Reid The al-Qaeda operative known as the "Shoe Bomber" who was subdued by passengers while attempting to detonate an explosive device on a 2001 transatlantic flight.
Operation Enduring Freedom The official code name for the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, initiated after the Taliban ignored an ultimatum to hand over the group's leadership.
