| Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) | organisms whose genome has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally through mating or natural recombination |
| personalized medicine | practice of medicine in which therapies are developed for patients most likely to benefit |
| bioreactors | large production tank used to grow bacterial cultures |
| biofuels | fuel produced from renewable biological resources |
| biosensors | device that uses biological materials to monitor the presence of chemicals in a sample or environment |
| bioremediation | use of microorganisms for the removal of pollutants from the environment |
| DNA Profiling | comparison of individuals using differences in DNA sequences. can be used in criminal investigations |
| DNA Barcoding | short sequence of an organism's DNA that can be used for species identification |
| pathogens | infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, fungi, prions and parasites) that cause disease in host organism |
| nanobiotechnology | area of study that applies nonbiological nanoscale devices to solve biological problems |
| nanoparticles | particles that are 1-100nanometers in size |
| investigational new drug (IND) | a regulatory application submitted to the FDA to obtain authorization to administer an unapproved experimental drug or biologic to humans |
| Toxic Waste | any discarded material or byproduct capable of causing injury, illness, or death to living organisms. |
| patent | an exclusive legal right granted by a government to an inventor, giving them the authority to exclude others from making, using, selling, or importing their invention for a limited period |
